A Diabetic Alert Dog, often called a DAD, is a specially trained Service Dog that helps people living with diabetes detect changes in blood sugar levels before they become dangerous.
Humans, especially young children, might not notice when their blood sugar starts to rise or fall, but a dog’s sense of smell is up to 100,000 times stronger than ours. That means they can detect subtle chemical changes in the body that occur when glucose levels shift. When they sense these changes, Diabetic Alert Dogs are trained to alert their handler right away, often beating a glucometer or continuous glucose monitor by 15-30 minutes. This means action can be taken sooner creating a much safer day-to-day life for Type 1 Diabetics.
